Professional Librarian Goals - FY 2011

After talking with a coworker about the ECC library vision and mission, I realized that I hadn't been acting strategically and working toward my goals as a professional. So, I looked up my review from 10/21/10 and found that I had accomplished some of my goals but not all of them.

Review of these goals and plan to accomplish more before making new ones for FY2012

ACCOMPLISHED
1) Learned Jing and created three library tutorials
2) Read much of the "Craft of Research" book

STILL TO COMPLETE
1) Learn more about ECC programs, curriculum, and student activities.
2) Watch Lynn teach more and maybe team teach
3) Read Learner-Centered Teaching and Renaissance Generation

FUTURE IDEAS
1) LOEX Conference or another closer and less expensive - have 1-2 days each semester???
2) Keep up by reading more library literature and blogs
3) Learn Captivate and do tutorials - 1) MLA in-text citations, 2) searching ProQuest

Power Principle #1 Step-Up Your Attitude
1) Change your thinking change your life - we don't dislike change, we just dislike change that's inconveinient at the time.
2) Crisis = a dangerous opportunity,
3) Applied knowledge is power and information w/o application only leads to frustration.
4) Win/Lose is wrong attitude. Think Win/Learn as we learn through loss.
5) Don't attach negativity to actions of the brain will avoid them
6) Cause vs. Effect. Choice is yours, Just because its happening in the world doesn't mean it will happen in your world, i.e. economic downturn
7) Design vs. Default - Your friends are God's way of apologizing for your family. Put intelligent & goal oriented people in your life on purpose. Put people in your life who aren't satisfied with your present so you will be challenged.
8) Abundance vs. Scarcity - be very careful who you tell your good news with - people who pour ice water on your ideas and aren't happy for you aren't good. Start being more abundant mentally, as you will attract that to yourself. My mind is like fertile farmland. It's only job is to harvest whatever I plant.
9) Honey vs. Kryptonite - all attitudes are contagious. Is your worth catching? Film actor, Denzel Washington (?) when asked which was his best film - My best one is my next one.

Power Principle #2 - Step up your Vision
A vision is something that has you. When you blue sky, what do you see? See something more powerful than what meets the eye. Television tells a lie to your vision, not happy with what you have what have is never enouh.

Power Principle #3 - Step-Up Leadership
Vulture = waiting for negative
Chicken - flies 4 feet off ground only (not an eagle)
Turkey - talk good but do nothing but gobble
Parrot - copy cat and mimic and not original
Eagles - fly alone or with other eagles and odn't sacrifice attitude to fly lower with others

Final Thoughts -
Always do more than you're paid to do - not always moey but your character that is important.

Do Consistently

Exercise more strenuosly to get more endorphins

Establish an exercise pattern, i.e. after breakfast or before lunch 10-11:00-Mon/Wed/Fri

Tense your body and then relax it, i.e. think about something distressing to you and notice the distress felt in the body. Stand up and clench your fists and shrug your shouders, etc. No let go. Breathe deeply and allow your muscles to relax completely. Repeat.

Get 7-9 hours sleep and have a regular routine

Eat things with Omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts and fish, etc.

Do something quickly to elevate your mood, i.e. count quickly, run somewhere

Applications

Work hard as an example in the library

Deepen connections - stop undue socializing/banal conversation and learn to ask questions that go deeper

Throw off perfectionism

Work through Markus Buckingham Strengths Finder materials

Fnd people and friends that challenge me - who is mentoring & coaching me

Plagiarism - Who wrote it anyway?

If you read the following NYT article Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age you will start to understand why so many students don't see the error of plagiarism. 40% admit to having borrowed other's words, and only 29% say that copying from the web is "serious cheating" per a study of 14,000 undergraduate surveyed 2006-2010 by "Donald L. McCabe, a co-founder of the Center for Academic Integrity and a business professor at Rutgers University." Sure the above quote is common knowledge, i.e. the person's position and affiliation with said organization, but I too copied and pasted it verbatim, as it was what I need to attribute the statistics . . . at least I gave the attribution, right? (My idea)

Per the NTY article students can readily find the stuff they need online, yet because it isn't a physical entity it seems to immediately belong to them to manipulate and use as needed. Even if this was a physical entity, the fact that there is often no clear author or authority behind the information found, i.e. Wikipedia, means that it seems to be fair game for usage without attribution.

Furthermore our world seems to be changing from the era of the 60s where uniqueness and authenticity was valued to an era in which students rather want to try on "many different personas" - "MyWord!: Plagiarism and College Culture" by Susan Blum.

The result to this modern information soceity is that we can't tell who did what, said what, or wrote what anymore. All of course is not a loss, as we are recreating things and connecting in various ways with the information. Ways we never could have imagined before. (My idea)

Notice my own week attempt to attribute ideas in this post - at least I tried!

I've found the following customized google search tool useful for helping to narrow the results to more quality resources for undergraduate research.

Start using the Undergraduate Research Engine. So far I've been thrilled with the results. A student shortened the url in my Library Instruction class to http://tiny.cc/ure

Thanks go to David Dillard, a reference librarian at Temple University, for creating this cutomized search box. I read about this on his yahoo group, NetGold and have contacted him regarding how this tool was created, i.e. what limiters he set up.

Tools for the online reading of the future

Just saw an article about some neat tools for simplifying your online reading experience. They bookmark things and/or make it easy to save reading to a mobile device.

Readability = This is what they call a bookmarklet. It reformats the text so that you don't see the adds and extra side bars, and does it in various modes - Newspaper, Novel, eBook.

Instapaper = a way to mark a text in your browser and then either read it later via your Instapaper account or more conveniently save it to another mobile device for easier viewing there.

Summer Projects at ECC

Today at our librarians meeting we discussed options of what we, the librarians at ECC, might like to accomplish over the summer. We also looked through the FY10 goals sheet and evaluated whether there were items from that to still address. It appears we accomplished much of what we set out to do last year, though I of course only starting March 1st didn't do much to help out in this.

So, what to do this summer? There are 21 hours a week I have to work and the students don't have as many questions as usual, so thus some time for summer projects.

Some ideas for summer projects:

Develop an information literacy action plan (including goals for each Research Session)
Continue to weed if this is desired by the Collection Development librarian
Discover Web 2.0 and possible library outreach and implementation of these tools
Learn about teaching and presenting to be more effective in bibliographic instruction
Read about current events to relate to students - more relevant examples for sessions
Finish the Arthur Lourie research - research writing skills and organizing thoughts(my personal goal and not a work-related one)
Acquaint myself with the library resources & ECC classes - reference, videos, databases, etc.

YES, there are many things to do and I will use my time wisely over the summer. Thank God for better air-conditioning today in the library.

A Personalized "Dashboard"

Though I have my own website at http://www.janaborchardt.com/ I now am creating a "dashboard" - a personalized newsboard or website which will allow me to more easily stay informed through the wonderful technology of widgets and RSS feeds. Instead of checking out several websites and blogs to find the latest news I can refer to my "dashboard."

I read about this cool Web 2.0 tool on another blog "Information Literacy Meets Web 2.0." When I complete my project I will let you see how it turned out.

Brainstorming - facilitating a lost skill

Why can't today's students brainstorm? See "Sparking a Brainstorm: Getting Students Organized" by Theresa Westbrock from the LOEX Quarterly (Summer 2009, vol. 36 no. 2). LOEX (Library Orientation Exchange) is a great organization for academic librarians who teach students information literacy skills. Their 38th annual conference was last this month.

QUOTE - "One could argue that the Web can take the place of brainstorming . . . they were used to letting the hyperlinks lead the way."

Thoughts on Brainstorming:

Students have difficulties brainstorming due to their online search habits
Brainstorming teaches students to pose better questions, the type with purpose and that lead to thought organization
Brainstorming helps students slow down the research process
Brainstorming helps students learn to care about the whole process, including finding quality resources
By facilitating brainstorming librarians encourage higher levels of information literacy than merely finding the resources***

***See the ACRL Information Literacy Standards) Instead of merely developing the student's ability to access needed information effectively and efficiently (Standard 2) we can look at Info Lit Standard 1.1b & 1.1e (1.1b=Develops a thesis statement and formulates questions based on the information need & 1.1e=Identifies key concepts and terms that describe the information need.

ECC Community College

I'm thrilled to be working as a reference librarian at Elgin Community College, where my librarian colleagues and I teach classes, lead library initiatives, operate efficiently, and inspire one another to focus on playing our best games as librarians.

One such possible endeavor is a proposed outreach activity I hope to implement sometime next spring with one of my colleagues. We are basing our idea for an Info Literacy blog upon an article in the LOEX Quarterly titled "No Time, No Problem: Using Blogs to Build Upon Face-To-Face Instruction" by Harold Goss.

Especially as we think about the often dreaded and required College 101 for the fall. Benefit Birthday Bash & other projects

Oops, I see I haven't posted here in quite some time. What has happened? Well, it has been a busy time these past few months - In July I had a Birthday Benefit Bash and raised $1000 for Breakthrough Urban Ministries - a homeless ministry in East Garfield Park, Chicago, IL. Some friends and colleagues from Merit School of Music and I performed everything from the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, to Gershwin, and Indie pop. The concert took place at the Lincoln Park Cultural center and we had an audience of around 40 people. Then in August I moved to a larger apartment in alas, the suburbs of Chicago, but only a short green line train away in Oak Park/River Forest.

Finally, over the past couple months I've been revisiting my Masters level research on the Russian composer, contemporary of Stravinsky, Arthur Lourie 1891-1966. By the end of the year I plan to have an article submitted for publication and at this point I'm planning on sending it first to "Notes" which is the Music Library Association's journal.

Alas, I've missed you Web 2.0 project, but now I see the new fad is a project called "Library 101." I don't want you to miss out, so check out the video/photo/song produced by some crazy librarians at http://www.libraryman.com/library101/

New Thoughts & Actions 2009

Yes, it is a new year and as usual I anticipate the possibilities and think of new schemes - I am going to post at least a couple of times on this blog, although I confess I'm becoming more of a facebook junkie than necessary - it keeps me away from thinking about all things Web 2.0 and being an information specialist. Yes, I am still that helping out kids as a librarian at a not-for-profit music school here in Chicago.

As for my "new thoughts and actions" in 2009 or my, don't say it, resolutions, I will list the following -
1) Keeping up with information happenings and posting here 2x a month.
2) Networking with other information specialists and making an effort to hang with new people.
3) Being more in touch with the spiritual - my relationship with Jesus and daily walk with him.
4) Performing music at the homeless shelter and senior center, yet looking for additional trumpet gigs as well.
5) Adopting a dog.
6) Considering a move to a bigger apartment that allows dogs.
and finally . . .
7) Making a difference in the world - forgetting myself and seeking for a life of service, living my most heroic life as God calls me - it's not what I want from this world, but living the kind of life the world needs from me.

Library 2.0 Spectrum

Though my current job is primarily face-to-face customer service with young kids, teens and their parents, I am very excited about the possibilities of Web 2.0 and updating myself through research. Still looking for my dream Library 2.0 job. However, like any hobby, these interactions via the Internet and keeping up-to-date are very time consuming. I partially utilize social networking as a performing musician, yet I never want to replace the live community of performing and rehearsing. Finding the balance is the key, but I do believe I am further to the right than the left. This said only 2 days before America's big 2008 Presidential election :)

Scrapblog - Worthwhile Web 2.0 Resource

Just found out from a friend about an online scrapbook that allows one to organize photos and videos in a creative fashion. Move over "Creative Memories" and home-based scrapbook clubs - Web 2.0 is taking over your domain. Scrapblog has been around since Fall 2006, but is now catching some media attention with recent spots on ABC and NBC. (Oct 13, 2008 Scrapblog's Blog)

As stated on the website "Create stunning multimedia scrapbooks. Share them online with family and friends and print them." By the way, due to copyright issues, the embedded music choices are limited, however, my friend got around this by linking to sound files which were located on other websites.

Conveniently enough, the currently featured scrapblog "Italia 2007" is of a person's visit to the three Italian cities which I visited last fall - Rome, Florence, and Venice. I'm thinking my first scrapblog will not replicate this but be an educational one . . . still plotting.

The Library is now Cool

This headline "New fans check out libraries" was in the Chicago Tribune's daily commuter magazine "The Red Eye" and the article says how libraries are becoming cool. More people are visiting and checking out materials from the library due to the state of the US economy. Sure, I don't like the higher prices of gas or food, but perhaps with this new usage of the library I'll potentially have more job security :) Since one pays around $70 a year in taxes to the local library why not find a movie with potentially more educational appeal or even not, as my public library has both. Enjoy the air conditioning, but know that the library is now cool for more than one reason.

See - Why Gen Y is going to change the web

Worth a read to understand the Generation from approximately 13 yrs to 31 yrs old - labeled Gen Y. Social Networking is really big as are social causes. If a job can't be fun then they will look elsewhere. Bosses beware and get ready to change your expectations and mindset to keep the younger generation happy and productive!

I too will need to consider how I can reach out to these socially enabled and wired kids. What they are looking for isn't always something to read - maybe they want a sound bite or a Youtube video and not a book. . . gee will anyone of Gen Y even want to read to the end of this posting. Sorry there's no fun picture posted.

There are links to YouTube videos of artists as well on last.fm, though I wonder about the use of the music and even some of the video coverage on these video tributes . . . Of course as a librarian I'm always thinking copyright!)
